The Silence Within

More about Kumud Dash

The Silence Within

There is a certain silence, a meditative resonance that you encounter when you see the paintings and sculptures of Kumud Dash. The Third eye stares you in the face and to some degree these paintings and sculptures provoke a delving into, the delving into culminates into being in the presence of divine tranquility, the serene smile of the Buddha.
A spell is cast and the spell is broken, both occurring simultaneously with the intrusion of symbols. Peace and violence. Kumud uses symbols of the tiger, the lotus, the dove, the elephant. Each symbol denoting a negative space or a positive space. Intensity is sustained through an accumulation and repetition. The serenity of the bronzed Buddha is illuminating.....you are in the Now. In other words, your sense faculties give you access to possibilities of deeper perception. Beyond ordinary perception, you experience an awareness, you experience unlimited sound, unlimited sight and unlimited feeling. It is limitless, so limitless that perception itself is primordial, unthinkable, beyond thought. That is exactly the artist's intention. He wants you to stop and think.  " We live in a world of violence. It is insane the violence that occurs all in the name of God ". He wants us to pursue peace. He wants us to create an energy of all invading peacefulness to power not only the world but power the inner recesses of our souls, so we become more loving and peaceful.
Kumud Dash uses a basic, recurrent and obsessively repeated symbology of figures and surfaces which he combines in a variety of seemingly experimental ways. Sometimes they are set in an infinitely deep space, at other times they are
inscribed in the picture plane. Sometimes they seem part of a narrative, at other times they seem to exist for themselves. Legend has it, that the mother of Buddha saw an elephant in her dream when she was pregnant with him.
By using Buddha the icon of peace in his works, the artist
makes an effort to save humankind from itself by restoring its sense of the divine possibilities of being, while still being human.
