More about Sreekanth Kurva

SOLO SHOW OF SREEKANTH KURVA

From 9th October to 24th Oct 2007

Once upon a time....were those your favourite words as a child? They were mine, because with those words my favourite time began - reading or being read to. Those words signaled that I would be transported to a faraway place or time and that my imagination would be engaged to go beyond my world into another - the world of a storyteller. Tell me a story.
Objects too, could tell stories without words and that narration has been among the generative impulses of artmaking from the beginning of time.
Sreekanth Kurva is a storyteller besides being an artist and printmaker. His motifs being the Bull as an animal and the cock/rooster as the bird.
After pursuing a BFA in painting from the College of Fine Arts, JNTU, Hyderabad, Kurva did his MFA specialising in Graphics from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. It was this experience that opened to him various possibilities and honed his penchant for craft techniques that allowed him to be very comfortable with intaglio and lithograph printmaking techniques. In a natural progression he moved from painting to collage making using drawing as an act of registration and as an act of imagination. Using coloured glossy swatches and textile prints from fashion magazines to begin with, he then progressed to actual textile swatches and ethnic prints of brocade and jari as materials for his collages again moving from works on paper to works on canvas embellishing the final outcome with brush strokes of paint.
The small format and the individual attention suggest intimacy, and as an oeuvre they are like memories gone over and over, as he goes over these two motifs again and again, rearticulating them differently but with comparable vividness, not only of detail, but of gesture and stance. Enlivened by the gestures of life, they represent the changing expressions of the familiar world. Kurva's strength is his ability to fuse graphic animation and colouristic expression with great skill and reason creating movement and a three dimensional form and image. His collages are dotted with ephemeral beauty, which haunts, questions and always delights, bringing harmony within contradictions and harmony between light and dark with his undulating grid of diamond and square swatches of paper or ethnic brocade or jari. The off-kiltercolours and the uneasy melding of order and irregularity provide a whiff of nostalgic, romanticized historical sensibility.
It is the integration of narrative constructions that determines Kurva's use of the rooster and the bull that inhabit his paintings. The narrative in his paintings become emblematic of contemporary economic and political tension.
Sheer decorative brillance and luminescent colours in his rooster and bull paintings fill us with pleasure and they both enchant our eyes and engage our minds.
