Spanish fair brings Indian artists more global visibility

Dated: 24-02-2009

India's pride of place at the recent Spanish international art fair ARCO has put the spotlight on contemporary art from the country, helping the approximately Rs 2000 crore and growing market to attract more foreign interest.

Even in the face of gloomy market sentiment, participating artists, gallery owners and curators at the recently concluded ARCO-Madrid, one of the biggest art fairs in the world, exuded optimism about the future of Indian art.

"There were more galleries at ARCO than at the Basel fair. The scale was overwhelming and it brought about branding and visibility to India among the Europeans," says art expert and director Indian Art Summit, Neha Kirpal who accompanied the Indian delegation to Madrid.

Over 55 artists from 13 galleries across the country participated at the fair where India was the guest country under the Panorama section.

"The West-led market for art has been witnessing a slowdown and others are realising that India which is an emerging market has its own dynamics. There are still transactions happening in this market," says Kripal.

Painter Jitesh Kallat who has been showcasing his works at Arco for a few years beginning from 2003 says, "The interest in contemporary Indian art has grown exponentially in the last five years and the main focus at Arco being India is a result of this."
