Akbar Padamsee
Born in Mumbai, Akbar Padamsee studied at the J J School of Art. He was associated with the Progressive Artists' Group during his student days. He left for Paris in 1951 where he worked till 1967. Padamsee was awarded the JD Rockefeller III Fund Fellowship in 1965, and in 1967 he was invited to Stout State University as artist-in-residence. Born in Mumbai, Akbar Padamsee studied at the J J School of Art. He was associated with the Progressive Artists' Group during his student days. He left for Paris in 1951 where he worked till 1967. Padamsee was awarded the JD Rockefeller III Fund Fellowship in 1965, and in 1967 he was invited to Stout State University as artist-in-residence. In 1969 Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship, in 1997 Kalidas Sanman and in 2004 Lalit Kala Ratna were awarded to him. He has had several solo exhibitions since 1952 and participation's in important group exhibitions including Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil (1959), Tokyo Biennale, Japan (1959), India Myth and Reality at MOMA, Oxford (1981), among others. In 1980 a retrospective of his works was organised in Delhi and in 2003-2004 Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai held a retrospective and released a book on his paper works. He lives and works in Mumbai.
